Work From Home Tutoring For Reasoning Mind

Reasoning Mind is a company that hire home-based tutors. They are a non-profit organization that has been in existence since 2000. Reasoning Mind partners with all kinds of schools nationwide, including inner city, suburban, private, and magnet schools. One of their primary focuses is to help students from economically disadvantaged communities.
Reasoning Mind allows their tutors to work from anywhere in the world, but you must have authorization to work in the US no matter where you are located.

Are you qualified to become a home-based tutor for Reasoning Mind?

You do not have to have previous tutoring or teaching experience to be considered for the tutoring position through Reasoning Mind although it’s a plus if you have that. You must be internet savvy and either a college student, recent college graduate, or a mid-career professional. A good knowledge of middle school level math is necessary and it’s even better if you have knowledge of high school level math. However, I notice that the job description states you are primarily tutoring 2nd through 6th grade students.

How much does Reasoning Mind pay their tutors?

I couldn’t find this info to start, but I emailed to ask and from the info I was given, it may depend on the time of year. In the fall of this year, tutors will be paid $15 an hour, but currently the rate is $11 an hour.

What is the schedule like?

It sounds like scheduling is pretty flexible. You must commit to a minimum of ten hours per week, and the tutoring times are during your typical school hours — currently between 8 am and 4 pm (CST), Monday through Friday. If you’ve got kids in school, it should be really easy to work this job around them. When you apply, you are asked to let Reasoning Mind know your availability during those hours, so you’re mostly in control of the specific hours you work.

What are the technical requirements?

This is not one of those jobs with a long list of specific equipment and computer specs you need. The ONLY thing I see listed as a requirement is a broadband internet connection for your computer.

What is the application process?

You apply via the “Apply Now” button on their website and through that you can submit your cover letter, resume, and contact information. If Reasoning Mind feels you might be a good fit, they will respond with some written assessments you’ll need to complete. If you do well on these, you will get a phone interview.
I’ve been doing some digging around the forums to find out more about this company, and it looks like if they are not interested, they will eventually send you a rejection email. So this may not be one of those companies that just leaves you hanging and never lets you know one way or the other if you got the job.

What is the feedback?

I can’t find anyone from the forums who has been hired for this or the other student mentor position Reasoning Mind occasionally advertises for, but as I mentioned above, there are a couple of reviews at Glassdoor. You can read those here, but I think you may need to be signed up there to read what they say. But just to sum up, the reviews are OK. People praised the pay, the hours, and the flexibility as well as the online interface you use to do the tutoring. Some cons mentioned were low pay, limited hours, and the fact that it may not be a long-term job.

Want to apply?

You can go here to apply at Reasoning Mind as a tutor. I would love to hear your feedback if you’ve ever worked there or attempted the application process for this position.

Freelance Transcription for Rev

Rev is a company I’ve come across a few times on the forums that regularly hires freelance transcribers and also translators. They are based out of San Francisco, CA, and it appears that they are open to hiring freelancers worldwide. It looks like the transcription you do for them is general, not medical.

Do you need experience?

They specifically state they are looking for skilled transcribers. However, the application page doesn’t ask how much experience you have and instead just requests you provide two transcription samples. If you can do well on your samples, you may have a shot at getting in regardless of how much experience you have.

Phone Work From Home at Windy City Call Center – IL or IN

One company that is often hiring home-based virtual call center reps is Windy City Call Center. I usually find their job leads posted when I search the Chicago-area Craigslist jobs page. As you might have guessed, you can’t really work for this company unless you are a resident of Illinois or Indiana due to the onsite training that is required prior to working from home. Prior outbound call center experience is preferred, but not required.
If you are in Illinois or Indiana and you’re looking for a work from home phone job, you might be curious about this company. I did the research today and have lots of info to share with you.

SpinGo Event Content Specialist – Non Phone Job From Home

I came across an interesting non-phone job lead the other day for a company called SpinGo that I thought I would share some information on since so many of you are looking for non-phone. The position is called “Event Content Specialist” and basically what you are doing is finding events in your area and then entering them into SpinGo’s database of events.
This is a US only, independent contractor position.

Work From Home Bookkeeping at Balance Your Books

Balance Your Books is a company that I often see with job postings for work from home bookkeepers. I have had a few people ask me about work from home bookkeeping positions, and actually there are quite a few opportunities out there. But today’s overview is just going to focus on Balance Your Books. The company is based out of New Jersey, but they have clients nationwide. According to their BBB listing, the company has been in business since 1999.
This opportunity is for US residents only.

Work at Home Virtual Assisting For SuperHuman

SuperHuman is a newer company that I first learned about earlier in the summer. They hire virtual assistants to work at home and add, edit, and delete events from their customers’ schedules. They call this “calendaring” because basically you are just updating the virtual calendars for their clients.
As you might have guessed this is another non-phone position, and it also appears to be open to US only at this time.

Working From Home as a General Transcriber

Over the past three years, I’ve touched on transcription in the form of company reviews and a list of sites that hire. I’ve never really gone into a lot of detail about what transcription is and how to get started. This post is meant to be a basic overview of general transcription.
In the coming months, you may see more of these overviews of various work from home career fields.

What is general transcription?

As you may or may not know, transcription is basically listening to an audio file and typing out what you hear. It is usually much easier to get started doing general transcription than it is medical transcription because medical requires experience and/or certification before most companies will hire you. When you do general transcription, you might be listening to personal conversations, business meetings, court hearings, college lectures, and any number of other audio files.

Transcription Editing for 3 Play Media

3 Play Media is a company based out of Massachusetts that provides captioning and transcription services to their clients. For a while now they have had an interesting work from home position listed — transcript editor.
Note that this company does require that you be a US resident with a college degree before they will consider you as a transcript editor. You will be working as an independent contractor for the company.

What does a transcript editor do?

From the job description:
We are looking for flex-time contract transcriptionists/editors to transcribe recorded audio and edit imperfect transcription using a proprietary internet-based software application.

Choosing a Quality Medical Transcription School

While searching for an online medical transcription school to sign up for, I did a vast amount of research on the options to be sure that I would make the right decision. Most medical transcription schools are not worth much in terms or training or their ability to prepare you to succeed in a career in the field. Unfortunately, most people don’t realize this until they have already spent their money and time on these programs and graduated—at which point they are unable to find a job. Employers know that graduates of many programs are not fully prepared to begin working, so they will not even consider their job application unless the individual already has years of working experience in transcribing medical records.

Working From Home as a Tax Advisor For Intuit

Intuit is a very well-known company that you’ve likely heard of. They are behind the popular QuickBooks, TurboTax, Mint.com, and several other things. What you might not have known is that Intuit hires people to work from home as tax advisors. These are often seasonal positions although you will sometimes see them advertise for year-round workers. If you have the right credentials and would prefer to avoid the daily commute, Intuit might be a good company to consider working for. I have done some research on their home-based tax advisors positions and provided those details for you below.
Intuit hires tax advisors in the US and Canada.

How much do Intuit tax advisors make?

The rate of pay isn’t listed on the website, but it’s rumored to be $18 per hour, possibly a little more. Apparently Intuit’s tax advisors used to get a really nice bonus in addition to their pay — up to $8,000 per season — but I don’t see mention of that on the current job posting, so I’m not sure it’s anything they still offer.

What does the job entail?

As a tax advisor for Intuit, you work from home helping out customers who contact Intuit about their TurboTax products. You’ll be handling inquiries that come through via phone, email, and chat. I did read at Work Place Like Home on a thread that was a couple of years old where someone had this job previously and only handled email and chat inquiries, which essentially means her position was non-phone. However, I don’t think you can choose that option when you apply. From what I read, it sounded like Intuit decided to let this person handle email and chat only because she was better at those kinds of inquiries.

What experience do you need?

There is a long list of requirements, so I’ve just copy/pasted from the job posting what Intuit is looking for:
  • Must possess ACTIVE credentials for one of the following: EA (Enrolled Agent) or CPA (Certified Public Accountant)
  • Must possess active PTIN.
  • Extensive knowledge of tax laws.
  • Experience using major tax preparation software. Experience with electronic filing a plus.
  • Minimum 5 years experience preparing federal and state returns either individual (1040) or business (1120, 1120S, 1065, 1041, 990, 706).
  • Able to research IRS and state publications, regulations, and GAAP publications.
  • Experience discussing complex tax topics or situations.
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills. Bilingual a plus.
  • Strong software troubleshooting abilities a plus.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.

What is the schedule like?

Intuit usually has both full- and part-time remote positions available. If you are full-time, you can expect to be working about 40 hours per week, and part-time may be around 30 hours per week.

How is the application process?

Someone posted about their Intuit seasonal tax advisor interview at Glassdoor. This person applied through a recruiter and claimed the entire process took three weeks. There was a two-part test, the first part covering your tax knowledge and the other part covering your English skills. If you make it through that, there is a phone interview. The test and interview is supposedly not terribly difficult if you know your tax stuff, but you need to have your reference materials handy in case you get a question you’re not sure about and need to look it up quickly.

Feedback

The bullet list below will take you to various places online where this position has been discussed or reviewed. The forums don’t have a ton of feedback from people who are actually doing or have done this job, but there’s a little there. Overall, it seems everyone has had a positive experience working from home for Intuit. If you meet the qualifications and know you can put in the hours, this would probably be a good job to get.

Getting Started

You will need to visit Intuit’s website to see if they currently have openings for remote tax advisors. Type in “remote” in the job keyword search box at the top of the page. If they have any openings, you’ll see them listed. Good luck!

Work From Home Transcription For CastingWords

If you’re new to general transcription and would like to get some paid practice in, CastingWords is a company to consider. They are a US based company that has existed since 2005. CastingWords usually posts their jobs on Amazon Mturk and there are almost always some there to do when I check. They also have a website where you can sign up directly and work if you would prefer not to go through Mturk, although there are advantages to using Mturk which we will discuss a bit later.
If you are completely unfamiliar with general transcription, you may want to read this post first.

Work From Home Data Entry For SigTracker

SigTracker is a company I found through the Work Place Like Home forum several months ago that recruits home-based workers for data entry. The work you do for them involves updating voter registrations for various states. I held off on writing about SigTracker for some time because there are so many data entry scams out there and I just wasn’t sure about this one. But since that time, many people have done work for the company and been paid as promised.
This opportunity is for US residents only, and you do have to verify your citizenship before they will accept you. You can verify this through Elance, which is where you have to sign up to do the work.

Work From Home Transcription For Transcribe Team

Transcribe Team has frequently advertised that they have work from home transcription openings available over the last several months. I took a closer look today and I see that this is one of those companies where no experience in transcription is actually needed to get started. However, this also means low pay. As always, I recommend that you use these low-pay transcription companies that hire beginners as a jumping off point to better paying transcription jobs. You can expect to gain some experience and earn a little extra money, but you might not do more than that here.

Short Tasks & Writing/Editing Jobs at CrowdSource

CrowdSource is a company that recently bought out Cloud Crowd (do you remember that one?). This company hires home-based workers to do short tasks as well as writing and editing jobs. Some of you may already be familiar with CrowdSource thanks to the many different tasks they post at Amazon Mturk. I know I’ve seen them and done a few on there myself. The work you do for CrowdSource is through the Amazon Mturk platform as of now. However, I read on their blog that they are working on something that will allow you to do work for CrowdSource outside of the Mturk system.
You can do work for CrowdSource no matter where you’re at in the world, but it is my understanding that you can’t get paid via bank transfer from Mturk if you’re outside the United States. I believe you can still work for deposits into your Amazon account that you can use for shopping if you are outside the US. Hopefully if CrowdSource gets their own work platform set up, it will allow non-US workers to get paid, too.

Finding Virtual Assistant Work With Assistant Match

I have received a few questions about Assistant Match — a website I have linked on the virtual assisting page in my directory. Some people get confused as to whether or not this is a job opportunity for virtual assistants or something else, so I did some digging to find out what I can.

About Assistant Match

When you visit the company’s “About” page, it’s clear they are a staffing agency. If you aren’t familiar with what a staffing agency does, they basically just find qualified workers for companies that need them. Assistant Match is in the business of matching qualified remote virtual assistants with companies or individuals who need VA services. They have been in business since 2007 and they were mentioned on the Today show as a viable resource for anyone looking into work from home virtual assisting. I dug around to find that clip, and you can see it here.

Companies That Hire For Work From Home Closed Captioning

A while back I created a post with kind of an overview of work from home closed captioning. You can read it here, but to summarize, this is basically where you work at home creating the captions for the hearing impaired for television, videos, etc. While it may seem like something fairly easy to do, it’s harder than you’d think and it’s something that you can’t really get into without some schooling. Still, it’s an industry that can pay well and may also allow you the luxury of working from home!
Below is a big list of companies that do hire for work from home closed captioning. Next to each company, I’ve tried to include some additional information. If you’re not familiar with how captioning works, you’ll probably be surprised by the high words per minute requirements for each company. Captioning is generally done with a stenotype machine (something court reporters use) and if you are trained to use one, it is possible to type well over 200 words per minute.

Work From Home Transcription Editing at Babbletype

Do you have a good command of the English language? Can you work well under tight deadlines and pressure? Are you focused with an eye for detail? Then Babbletype might be the right work-at-home (WAH) company for you.

What Exactly is Babbletype?

Babbletype is a transcription site that offers the at-home Quality Assurance Associate/Editor or “Q&A Editor” position for its transcription services. While it does hire transcriptionists both in the US and abroad as well as customer service agents, this article will discuss the Q&A Editor position.

What Does a Virtual Assistant Do?

Have you heard the term virtual assistance being tossed around? In your previous life, were you an administrative assistant or an executive assistant? Do you dream of working from home and using your clerical skills to make money? Well, then becoming a virtual assistant might be the right work-at-home career for you.

What Exactly is a Virtual Assistant?

A virtual assistant is a highly skilled entrepreneur who offers administrative skills and selective expertise to businesses on an “as-needed” basis.  The service is offered virtually using the Internet, email, fax or phone.  Distance and time zones are not a problem.
However, the key here is to remember that a virtual assistant is more than just a “cyber-secretary”.  A virtual assistant is also an entrepreneur and business owner.
